Kenya is pinning its hopes on 28-year-old Hellen Syombua Kalii and 23-year-old Gladys Mumbe sprint stars as the country gears up for the World Athletics Relays Championships set for May 10th to 11th in Guangzhou, China.
Both sprinters who hail from the Ukambani region have been in stellar form this season, bringing a potent combination of speed, experience, and determination to Kenya’s sprint relay teams. Their performances have earned them a central role in the country’s quest for Olympic qualification and global acclaim.
Syombua, a seasoned athlete affiliated with the Kenya Police athletics team, has already flown the national flag at top-tier competitions, including the 2019 World Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Hellen Syombua, a 400m specialist, returns to international competition after a maternity break. She was previously part of the Kenyan quartet that won bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2019 World Relays in Yokohama. Syombua has expressed her determination to secure a podium finish in Guangzhou and to qualify for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this year.
Gladys Mumbe, also a 400m runner, has earned her place on the national team after years of effort. She will be making her debut at the World Relays, contributing to Kenya’s pursuit of medals and qualification for the upcoming World Championships .
Joining Syombua and Mumbe on the national squad under the guidance of head coach Julius Towett, are, Mercy Chebet, Esther Mbagari, Evangeline Mukua, and Esther Mbagari, Lanoline Aoko, Mercy Oketch, Vanice Kerubo— a blend of experience and young talent as the team has been undergoing intensive training at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, sharpening baton exchanges and building team chemistry ahead of the global showdown.
With National pride and Olympic dreams at stake, all eyes will be on Syombua and Mumbe as they aim to anchor Kenya’s sprint relay teams to success in China.
