Transport Paralysed as River Enziu Floods

Transport has come to a standstill in Mwingi due to flooding of the Enziu River following heavy rains, blocking citizens from crossing. This unfortunate situation has significantly impacted local communities, exacerbating challenges for commuters and traders alike.

The Enziu River’s overflow has once again raised safety concerns after a tragic incident in December 4, 2021. At that time, a 32-seater school bus ferrying over 40 catholic church members to a wedding ceremony was swept away, tragically resulting in the loss of 22 lives.

Despite assurances from the government to construct a bridge over the Enziu River, progress on this critical project remains elusive. The lack of action has left residents worried about their safety during periods of heavy rains, as the river poses an increased risk.

Local leaders and residents are calling on authorities to fastrack the construction of the Enziu River bridge to prevent future tragedies and to restore vital transport links essential for the economic and social well-being of the region.

Bisengo responds to Katombi after he deleted Sam the Guitar Boy’s ‘Nduanyo sya aini’ song

Producer Toby Bisengo reacted to Kamba Benga gospel artist Alex Kasau Katombi’s move to delete the ‘Nduanyo sya aini’ song by Sam the Guitar Boy from his YouTube channel.

The song which was praising Ken Kijana popularly known as ‘Ndeke ya Muthanga’ was removed due to copyright claims that Sam the Guitar Boy used Katomb’s beat from his (Katombi) ‘Nduanyo’ song.

Bisengo posted on his Facebook page pointed out that the senior artists should not discourage the upcoming artists from doing cover songs since this is a way of encouraging them to be more creative.

“Sorry Guiter Boy for what you passed through, this is one of the tests you need to pass through the music journey for you to persevere. I have no beef with Bazuu, we are in totally different leagues but what he did was totally wrong, ” Bisengo said.

Bisengo pointed out that the young man is an upcoming artist because he was only playing guitar but now he has decided to start singing and started to appreciate one of his friends(Ken Kijana) and decided that because he loves Katombi songs, he will use beats from his song.

“He is just innocent, what he could have done was to consult Katombi before he used the copyrighted beat. He might have tried to reach on him but I understand some of these senior artists can be unreachable sometimes. Like for me if I’m on top I don’t need to demean those below me, I should be supporting them,” Bisengo stated.

He said that moving forward if artists find that other upcoming artists may have used their beat or altered their beat knowingly or unknowingly, they should call them to inquire whether they are aware that is copyright infringement because some of the upcoming artists are innocent and don’t know anything to do with copyright claims.

“Some of them are innocent, if one accepts that it’s true they have used your beat unknowingly, they can call them to their studios or offices to guide them on how to do it next time. There is no need to strike someone, it is good to warn them first because they are young, and not informed. Bazuu should have just called the innocent boy and seen how he could mentor the young boy because he had acknowledged that he loves his songs,” Bisengo added

Clarifying why he used the beat, Sam the Guitar Boy said that he likes the songs from Katombi and what he did was he sang the song as a cover song of the original Nduanyo Song.

“I love his songs and that’s why I decided to sing the cover song to my brother Ndeke who has been facing backlash from his fellow gospel artists. I didn’t mean to copyright Katombi’s songs, I even decided to reach out to him but all was in vain,” Sam said in one of the interviews.

FIDA Advocates for Women Leadership in Machakos Debate

0

Virginia Kibunja, a program officer Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has advocated for Women’s Leadership in the Machakos County Debate.

She weighed in on the matter at a public participation event organized by FIDA, with the help of USAID-ELGIA. Machakos County Assembly women’s caucus participated in an open debate between female leaders and the public about topics concerning women’s leadership and governance.

Virginia told the press at Machakos Social Hall that the conference was a way to bring women together and debate ways to remove barriers to their political engagement. She emphasized FIDA’s goal of encouraging individuals’ active participation in the democratic process. This is through offering a forum for them to air their concerns, provide feedback, and contribute to the governance and legislation reform processes.

She noted that FIDA is committed to educating citizens about their role in encouraging women in management and how to deal with the obstacles they face. Kibunja also stated that the federation was analyzing the development and achievements made by the female leaders since they rose to leadership within the last year.

“We have worked with the Machakos County Assembly where we have conducted membership training with them and helped the women in capacity building that will equip them effectively to come up with gender-responsive legislation,” Kibunja said.

She mentioned that financial constraints are one of the major challenges that women pursuing leadership in Kenya confront.

“Electoral-based violence was also mentioned in the forum and online bullying during campaigns and voting process discouraged the majority of the women from vying for the political seats,” she went on to say.

A comparable public discussion forum is currently underway in other counties, including Nakuru and Kirinyaga, to improve transparency and adaptability in women’s governance and leadership, as well as to encourage citizen engagement in democracy as a whole.

Machakos County Assembly Speaker Ann Kiusya highlighted that cultural norms are among the barriers that women encounter when running for political office.

“Women can lead and succeed. Women are capable of leadership and can achieve great things when supported, as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Machakos I am equal to the task and have been doing my work well,” she said.

She lamented the small percentage of elected female members of the County Assembly and urged the community to support women and close the gender leadership gap in the country.
