The political landscape in Kitui County is heating up as the 2027 general election approaches, with high-profile leaders already gearing up for a fierce battle over the governor’s seat.
Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu and Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu are emerging as key contenders, both eager to succeed Governor Julius Malombe.
Kasalu, known for her boldness, fired the first shot at a function, vowing to deliver a humiliating defeat to her longtime political ally turned rival.
“I’ve heard Makali is eyeing the county’s top job, He’s brought people to show him the way. But let him know that I already know the way. I’ve lived and breathed Kitui politics, and I’m ready to lead.” Kasalu declared confidently in the function.
Makali, however, was quick to respond, not taking Kasalu’s challenge lightly. Speaking at a separate event, the three-term Kitui Central MP, who’s now setting his sights on a larger prize, issued a stern warning.
“She doesn’t know the kind of animal she’s trying to shoot with a bow,” he said, cautioning that those who’ve underestimated him in the past have often regretted it.
Makali, known for his resilience and grassroots connections, is convinced his time has come to lead Kitui.
Both leaders bring significant political experience to the table, Kasalu is in her second term as Woman Rep, while Makali’s tenure as MP spans over a decade.
The growing rivalry between them is likely to make for a dramatic showdown, with each candidate trying to outmaneuver the other in a country known for its political unpredictability.
But the race isn’t just between these two. Former EAC & ASAL Cabinet Secretary Penina Malonza and political heavyweight Charity Ngilu, the former governor, are also said to be eyeing the seat.
With such big names vying for the position, the Kitui gubernatorial race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting and closely watched contests in the country.
