Samuel Musembi Kamitu, the prime suspect in the murder of Scottish businessman Campbell Scott, was laid to rest on Saturday in Makindu in a burial attended by close family and friends.
Musembi’s death, officially ruled as suicide, adds another tragic turn to the high-profile case that has gripped the nation.
Musembi had been on the run following allegations of his involvement in the transportation of Scott’s body from Nairobi to Makongo Forest in Makueni County, where it was discovered concealed in a sack of pineapples. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) had identified Musembi and two other suspects as key persons of interest in the case.
According to police reports, Musembi had been hiding at a friend’s home in Dandora, Nairobi. On March 11, his host returned to find him unconscious, exhibiting foam around his mouth and suffering from a stab wound to the neck. Despite being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Investigators believe he may have ingested poison before inflicting the fatal wound on himself.
His cousin, speaking at the funeral, recounted the moment she learned of his hospitalization:
“on tarehe tisa nilipigiwa simu, nikaambiwa causing Yangu ako Kenyatta, nilipoenda nilimpata ICU nilipomuangalia nilijua ametuwacha,” Stated Musembi’s cousin.
“Tumepata report cousin yangu alikunywa sumu,ni kujiua amejiua,” she added
She further confirmed that Musembi, a father of three, had been battling depression for a while.
“Tulikuwa tumeongea January akiniambia mashida ako nayo,” she narrated.
Campbell Scott, 58, had traveled to Kenya in mid-February for a business conference. He was last seen on February 16 in Nairobi’s Westlands area. His body was found on February 22 in Makongo Forest, sparking a complex investigation involving multiple suspects and allegations of kidnapping and theft
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to aid in resolving the case and bringing closure to both families affected by the tragedy.
