A section of members of Matuu Wendano Company Limited in Matungulu Sub-county, Machakos, have raised concerns over the venue for the upcoming sub-county cooperative elections, which are scheduled to be held at the County Commander’s offices in Machakos town.
Speaking to Mauvoo News, the members questioned the decision to hold the elections far from the company’s locality, citing challenges for elderly members who may struggle to travel the long distance.
They are now appealing for the elections to be conducted closer to their cooperative—preferably on the company’s farm—to ensure inclusivity and ease of access for all members.
Josephine Mulaa, one of the members, criticized the choice of Machakos as the polling venue, arguing that it would be more appropriate and legal to hold the elections on the company’s property.
“We’ve heard through the media that the elections will be held in Machakos. But considering we have our own land, I believe it is only fair and legal that the elections take place on the farm itself,” Mulaa said.
She emphasized that many members are elderly and would face logistical and financial burdens in traveling to Machakos, which could discourage participation.
“Can you imagine all these old men and women having to pay fare just to vote? It would be much easier and more convenient if the exercise were held on the farm,” she added.
Beyond the election venue, Mulaa also raised concerns about the status of the company’s assets, infrastructure, and land ownership. She recalled that following the 2013 elections, internal disputes erupted soon after a new leadership team took office, casting doubt on the safety and transparency of the company’s operations.
“In 2013, shortly after a new team assumed leadership, disputes started. As members, we are left wondering—are our assets safe? What do we truly own?”
She called for a committed and transparent leadership team that will prioritize members’ interests, safeguard company assets, and resolve longstanding internal conflicts.
The members stressed the need for a free, fair, and inclusive electoral process, saying that strengthening unity and transparency will be key to securing the future of Matuu Wendano Company Limited.
