3 dead in Kangundo and Matungulu as rains wreak havoc

Tragedy struck in Manyanzaani, Ngonda in Matungulu as a woman and her seven-year-old grandchild met a tragic end when their toilet collapsed.

The heart-wrenching incident was confirmed by Kyaume Assistant Chief Ancent Musembi who highlighted the urgency of timely reporting to facilitate swift rescue operations.

He noted that rescue operations proved futile as the two were already dead after being retrieved from the toilet.

“The loss of life is devastating. We urge residents to promptly alert authorities, including the MCA, myself, the Chief, OCPD, or Machakos emergency services, to ensure swift responses in such emergencies,” expressed Chief Musembi.

Meanwhile, in neighboring Kangundo, the relentless downpour claimed another life as a 70-year-old man perished when his house wall gave way in Kwandili.

Kawauni Assistant Chief Januaris Nzioka emphasized the need for vigilance during heavy rains, urging locals to evacuate hazardous areas and seek safer shelters.

He noted that due to heavy rains some structures like toilets and poorly constructed brick houses had become a danger zone.

“Your safety is paramount. Don’t take chances during these rains. Avoid unstable structures and reach out for assistance or relocation if needed,” cautioned Chief Nzioka, echoing the government’s plea for proactive safety measures.
