Residents of Masinga and Yatta sub-counties may soon no longer need to travel to Machakos town for specialized medical care, following Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s announcement to upgrade Matuu Level 4 Hospital to Level 5 status.
Speaking in Muonyweni village during the burial of 65-year-old Justina Mwini, who succumbed to cancer, Wavinya emphasized her administration’s commitment to improving healthcare access across the county.
“Cancer is curable if detected early. As a county, we are committed to equipping our hospitals so our people can access the healthcare they need,” she said.
Wavinya noted that healthcare continues to take the largest share of the county budget. She revealed that the upgraded Matuu hospital will soon be commissioned and will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities worth millions, including a CT scan machine.
In addition, the governor announced that plans are already in motion to elevate Kithimani Level 3 Hospital to a Level 4 facility.
She also called on the national government to expedite the disbursement of Social Health Authority (SHA) reimbursements to counties, citing delays that are hampering service delivery.
“The delays in reimbursements are putting counties in a tight spot, especially when it comes to purchasing essential drugs,” she said.
