Mulyungi: Why Government should not think of mining Kitui coal

0

Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has opposed the latest plan by Mining CS Salim Mvurya to start mining coal and other minerals in Kitui county.

The Wiper legislator warned CS Mvurya of the mass displacement that will be a result of the mining and also adverse effects on the environment. While addressing the media outside the parliament building, Mulyungi said that after the CS hosted Governor Malombe to discuss the issue of mining in Kitui, the Kitui elected leaders won’t accept the mining of coal in Kitui.

“I want to tell CS Mvurya that as you speculate about minerals because I saw you listing Kitui as one of the counties rich in mineral resources and targetted for mining, keep off coal mining in Mui basin which is Mwingi Central constituency. That is a matter that we have gone over and over, although you’re very new in the Ministry, with your predecessors,” Mulyungi remarked.

The Mwingi Central MP invited the Mining Cabinet Secretary to look at the Parliamentary report on coal mining that he (Mulyungi) presented in 2019 and motion tabled in parliament.

“He should look at the motion that was tabled in Parliament in 2019 where Parliament in its wisdom stopped coal mining in Kitui until Consensus building is done. Speculating about the mining of the coal in the Mui basin is a no-go zone and we won’t allow that to happen,” he added.

Mulyungi also revealed that he had even personally discussed the matter with President Ruto and agreed on how to proceed. The vocal legislator said that it is very clear that coal is not the way to go considering that the community might get little benefit from the mining but the environmental and health effects will bring more harm to the people.

“Coal mining is not clean energy, it is a health hazard, causes mass displacement of people, and therefore anything that displaces people from their homes, especially where they have buried their loved ones and during these difficult times, we can’t allow that to happen,” Mulyungi added.

In November 2022, Nimrod Mbai also spoke against the mining of coal in Kitui.

An estimated 400 million tons of coal deposits are believed to be in the 123,553-acre Mui Coal Basin which stretches from Mwingi Central to Kitui East. The Mui Coal Basin is divided into blocks A to D where the concession to mine coal in Blocks C and D of the Mui Coal Basin was awarded to the Fenxi Mining Industry of China in December 2013 but since then nothing has happened.

Coal mining concessions in Blocks A and B were also put on hold, even after the tender was advertised.

The new administration has hinted at commencing mining coal in Kitui county. Missed the story by Trade CS Moses Kuria? Check it out below;

Mutula reveals how Ruto won 2022 elections, advises Kalonzo on Presidency

0

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has disclosed how President William Ruto won the 2022 August elections.

Speaking at Muvau, Mutula said that apart from aggressive campaigning Ruto had a lot money which catapulted him to the presidency.

According to Mutula if not for money, Ruto would not have won. He urged Kamba leaders to be orderly and have a solid plan if they dream of getting the Presidency.

The Governor noted that Ruto had people who stood with him financially thus giving him an upper hand in the elections.

“You want to be president yet you cannot even give out 10 million shillings. This thing is not collected on the road. Just ask the one on the seat how he did it, he would be frustrated here and get money from somewhere else until he got the seat while some thought it was a joke,” Mutula said.

“He was self-sufficient and that is why he is seated on the seat, now you are claiming you want to go to Statehouse, that is not how things are done, statehouse is not a bedroom that you would tell someone to move a bit for you to sleep,”he added amid laughter from the crowd.

He noted that if the Kamba community does not position itself well, then getting the presidency will be a dream that will never come true.

Mutula spoke while launching the Ndukuma dam that is being constructed by the County Government of Makueni.

The County has committed 50 million for the first phase of the 58-acre dam. Once completed the dam will serve more than 19 villages.

Yatta MP message to Ukambani Governors ahead of Monday’s Azimio demos

Yatta MP Robert Basil has asked Ukambani Governors to be part of the planned demonstrations by the Azimio coalition next week.

Speaking in Nairobi, Basil said that the demos are people’s voices that the cost of living has gone up and the Government needs to do something.

In order for the voice to be heard Basil said all leaders across the region should join.

“The time for Kamba leaders to come together is now, lets all show up for the demos standing in solidarity with our leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other Azimio leaders,” Basil said.

He also rubbished claims that the coalition plans on ferrying people to the demos.

“Every Kenyan is feeling the pinch due to the high cost of living. We won’t ferry anyone to the demos because we have enough followers and more so those in Nairobi are enough for the demo. So those claiming we will ferry people should be ashamed. We will not relent in putting the Government in check, “Basil went on.

Governors from Ukambani have not shown any interest in the Azimio demos and rallies that have been held in several Counties.

In January, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo junior noted that he would not be involved in the Azimio rallies and demos until the Ukambani region gets developed like the Nyanza region.

The Governor vowed to work closely with the current Government and ensure development for his people

The same vow was made by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti who has never appeared in any of the Azimio rallies.
