A look into Kalonzo’s 200-acre Yatta Ranch

Apart from owning several businesses, the Yatta ranch is arguably Kalonzo’s most talked about property.

The ranch became a topic of discussion amid Azimio demos last year after unconfirmed claims that some people were planning on raiding it.

The ranch sits on 200-acre land on the outskirts of Machakos town and Kalonzo has on several occasions held mega meetings bringing together politicians and clergy there.

In the Ranch, Kalonzo has ventured into farming and livestock keeping.

Although details about the farm remain scanty according to pictures posted by Kalonzo on his social media pages, the senior counsel has reared chicken and beef cattle.

He also farms cabbages, onions, beans, maize, and different vegetables and had tens of workers managing the farm.

Whenever he takes a break from politics the former Vice President visits the farm and engages in various activities.

In 2021, Kalonzo was accused of grabbing the land from the National Youth Service forcing him to surrender to the DCI which cleared his name and confirmed indeed he owned the land.

All this happened as he and then Deputy President William Ruto exchanged bitter words over the land.

Ruto had alleged that Kalonzo grabbed the land during former President Daniel Moi’s era.

In retaliation, Kalonzo then noted that Ruto should be the last person to speak in matters concerning grabbing land.

Kangundo: Quarry owners resolve to stop employing minors

Quarry owners from Kathaana in Kangundo Sub-county have resolved that they will not employ school-going children to be casual laborers in the mines.

Speaking during Educational day at Kathaana Secondary School in Kangundo sub-county, the school Board of Management Chair Dr. Ancent Kituku said that “easy money” that was being paid by quarry owners to the minors made them leave school.

Kituku noted that the majority of boys from that area were not going to school and those in school had not been attending for long as many of them were going for jobs in the quarries.

During the Education day they came to a resolution that the quarry owners would work hand in hand with the school and would not employ anyone in the quarries who had not attained 18 years of age.

“We border quarries and as a school, we have fallen victim to that. Today we have resolved that all quarry owners and operators will not employ someone below the age of 18 years. Before anyone works in those quarries let them first produce their National ID,” said Dr. Kituku.

His words were echoed by the Parents Association as well as the teachers noting that they would work with the administration to ensure such cases of students leaving school to work in quarries were stopped.

Machakos: Farmers decry quality of subsidized fertilizer

Farmers from Matungulu Sub-county have decried the quality of government-subsidized fertilizer bought from the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Tala Branch.

They raised concerns that the fertilizer is full of small stones which are more than the combinations that make the fertilizer compounds.

Speaking to Mauvoo News, one of the farmers said that they realized that after applying fertilizers to their crops something looking like stones was being left behind after the rest has dissolved and intrigued them.

The farmers said after consulting they found out that it was the same in many farms and the fertilizer that had that residue was coming from Cereal Board Tala.

“As farmers, we are really disappointed in this subsidized fertilizer because it has more stones than fertilizer. We know that when you apply fertilizer in your crops it dissolves after rains but this one you go to the farm in the morning and you find it has not dissolved only to find stones,” said one of the farmers.

“Our plea is to the Government to help us as farmers because we are spending money to buy this fertilizer. A 50 kg bag goes for 3,250 and it is sad to find half of it is stones rather than fertilizer, how will we know our crops are going to yield if we use such things,” asked another farmer.

Depot Manager at Tala Cereal Board Alice Muiruri said that they had not received any complaints from the farmers about the fertilizer even though that type of fertilizer the farmers were complaining about is no longer available.

She noted that if anyone had complaints they should raise them with the Head office in Nairobi or fill out a complaints form to the Cereals Board and it would be looked into.

“We have not received any complaints from the farmers about our fertilizers. If it has stones I do not know because I just receive and disperse and when it comes it’s sealed and approved by KEBS. Let them come fill up complaints forms and the matter will be looked into,” Muiruri said.

The Agriculture office in Matungulu informed Mauvoo News that the fertilizer was blended and the stones were alkaline so they would dissolve later as the crop grow.

Syombua Osiany names Presenters who helped her get Musyi job

Inuka show host and former Citizen Radio presenter Syombua Osiany says her landing a job at Musyi FM was miraculous.

In an interview at a local station, Syombua said that she completed her studies at Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) and joined Royal Media Services-owned radio Musyi FM as an intern.

While at the Radio station, the presenters were impressed with her work pushing for her to be employed.

“By the time I graduated, I was already at Musyi FM. I joined Musyi FM in March 2007 and while there those working there loved me a lot, in fact when my attachment was over, and I am saying this before God these people pleaded for my employment,” Syombua said.

“These people include Nzau wa Kalulu, Wavinya Muthiani, Jacob William Maunda, Christine Ndanu, and others, they pleaded with the management not to let me go,” she added.

She noted that she began as a Weather presenter before being absorbed as a full-time presenter.

“When Esther Ndunge ‘Mwiitu wa Musumbi’ left the station is the time I was confirmed as a presenter,” she noted.

She hosted ‘Aikii’ and ‘Kwaka Musyi’ at Musyi FM until 2014 when she moved to sister station Radio Citizen.

In 2014, there was a position left vacant at Radio citizen and when she went for interviews she was chosen to replace Maggy Waithera at the Chapa Kazi morning show.

She also hosted ‘Wingu la Baraka’ and later the Pambazuka show.

In June 2020 Syombua was among the journalists who were laid off by the company due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“On that fateful day, I did my morning show and went back home and slept. On waking up at around 10 am I found missed calls from my boss who asked me to go to work immediately,” Syombua disclosed.

“I rushed to work and found many people going in and sensed something was not right. On getting to the reception people who worked in TV, Citizen radio, and other vernacular radio stations were in a somber mood and some were crying. I found myself consoling them even before I was handed my letter,” she added.

Syombua says she never carried a grudge from the sacking because she is aware many companies were struggling to stay afloat due to the pandemic.
