Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has condemned the fatal police shootings and use of force that occurred during Gen Z demonstrations in Emali on Wednesday, marking the first anniversary of the youth-led protests that shaped national discourse last year.
In an official statement, Mutula revealed that two people were shot and killed by police, while several others sustained injuries in Emali during the demonstrations held in various parts of the country, including Makueni County.
Kilonzo expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims. He also wished a quick recovery to those who sustained injuries during the protest and are currently undergoing treatment.
“Similar demonstrations were held in Makueni County where, regrettably, two people were shot and killed by police in Emali and others injured,” Governor Mutula revealed in the statement.
“I strongly condemn the use of live bullets to disperse demonstrators. The killing of demonstrators has no place in a modern Kenya,” he added.
The governor called for accountability from security agencies and reaffirmed the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protests, urging authorities to uphold human rights and avoid the use of excessive force.
The Gen Z protests, which began a year ago, have become a symbol of youth resistance and civic engagement in Kenya, drawing attention to issues of governance, economic hardship, and police accountability.
