Machakos Gubernatorial Candidate and UDA Chairman Johnson Muthama has started to roll out a school feeding program to all primary and day secondary schools in Machakos County.
Speaking after meeting with Pastors drawn from Kathiani, Kangundo, and Matungulu Subcounties, Muthama said that hunger has hit many areas in the county and he saw it wise to start his own feeding program in schools as a way of ensuring that the learners stay in class and parents are comfortable.
He noted that the programme was not a way of garnering votes but it was a way of giving hope to the people and ensuring children do not miss school because of hunger asking other leaders to emulate the same.
“I have started a school feeding program across the county and so far have given out food to 3 sub-counties and the rest I will do so by end of next Monday. I will be giving food to all primary schools and day secondary schools all over the county,” Muthama said.
“Instead of handing out 100 or 50 shillings to people and leaving them fighting it is wise, my opponents devise means to help the people. Am not doing this to get votes but to ensure that our school-going children do not miss school because of hunger,” he added.
According to the ministry of education, there are about 766 public primary schools in Machakos and 224 private schools in the county while day secondary schools in the county are more than 200.
