Johnson Muthama was born on 20th October 1954. His middle name is Nduya. He served as a member of parliament for Kangundo constituency for one term from 2008 to 2013. During his term at the national assembly, he served as the Government Chief Whip. Muthama then served as the first Machakos County Senator between 2013 and 2017 in the advent of devolution. He also served as the Minority Whip during his term as a Senator.

In the build-up to the 2017 general election, Muthama served as Co-Chairperson of the National Super Alliance (NASA) management committee. Muthama declined to defend his Machakos County Senator seat in a move to protest the handling of the Wiper Party gubernatorial nominations in Machakos county.
