Lovers of Kamba benga music are mourning the death of Mukuu, a renowned guitarist known for his prowess in playing the rhythm guitar.
For the listeners of Kamba Benga songs, several Musicians mention ‘Haapo Mukuu’ as a sign of appreciating him for his rhythm prowess which has seen him play for almost all the Kamba Benga bands.
Richard Mukuu Matonyi is his official name and he was born in Kisasi, Kitui Rural constituency just after the famous Nzeu River. Mukuu later vacated Mosa near Mosa Market where he has been living with his family before his demise.
According to reports from one of his close allies, Mukuu has been at home in Mosa village in Kitui Rural Constituency and has been unwell for some time due to liver complications. Before his demise, he was taken to Machakos hospital on Tuesday for treatment where he died on Tuesday evening while receiving treatment.
Several Kamba icons led by Alex Kasau and DJ Biado eulogized Mukuu as a dedicated guitarist and expressed their grief for the loss of the talented guitarist. Mukuu has previously worked with Alex Kasau Kisinga (Katombi), Sanita, Vuusya Uungu and he also had his band called Semea Boys band.
Other Kamba icons who eulogized Mukuu are Musyi FM radio presenter Jacqueline Kalenga who posted in Kamba dialect, ” Rest in peace Mukuu if you reach heaven play for them your Rhythm guitar.”
Benga Nation KE said, “Rest in Peace Richard Mukuu. Mukuu is a prominent Rhythm guitarist both on stage and in the studio. He has played rhythm guitar for almost all Kamba Benga artists including Alex Kasau Kulukulu popularly known as Katombi. Benga Nation is mourning.”
Kamba Music platform posted, ” Rest in Peace Richard Mukuu (Rhythm Guitarist) Our heartfelt Condolences to Mukuu’s Family and the entire Kamba music community. We have lost a star. May God comfort his family during this difficult time.”
Radio Presenter Master Mully Mweene said, ” Very Sad News To Cope With. It’s a big loss to the Industry. R.I.P #RichardMukuu.”
Nico Kyalo added, ” Rest in peace Richard Mukuu, you’ve left a mark on the world through your talent for playing the rhythm guitar.
