Kawaya Reveals Plan By State to end health crisis in Counties

Mwala MP Eng. Vincent Musyoka has announced that the national government is planning to purchase drugs directly from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) in a bid to end persistent drug shortages in county hospitals.

Speaking during a public address in Mbuni, Mwala Subcounty, Kawaya said the move will guarantee a steady supply of essential medicines while curbing the misappropriation of healthcare funds.

He accused some governors of pocketing money meant for medical supplies, leading to the deterioration of the health sector.

“We will not wait, and we won’t be in the chains of governors. We are in conversation with the President so that drugs and medical supplies can be purchased directly from KEMSA, instead of giving funds to governors who squander them,” he said.

Kawaya further criticized county bosses for blaming the national government for health funding challenges, noting that the sector is devolved and resources are already allocated to counties for drug procurement.

His remarks come at a time when Machakos Nurses have downed their tools due to drug shortages, resulting in suffering for patients.
