Makueni Senator and Kalonzo’s confidant Mutula Kilonzo Junior has disclosed that the Jubilee Party was to support Kalonzo Musyoka instead of ODM leader Raila Odinga in August 2022 general election.
However, Mutula stated that their agreement was overturned in a twist of events that have even made it hard for the Ukambani region to get ongoing Government projects completed.
The senator speaking at a local Radio station also revealed that during the handshake, Raila and President Uhuru had agreed to retire from politics and leave the presidency to Kalonzo who would battle with Deputy President William Ruto but they later met without involving the Wiper party and resolved that Raila will not retire as agreed.
“When Kalonzo agreed that he will work together with President Uhuru, they called us for a meeting in 2020 and they told us that the person who got into the handshake first (Raila) has been troubling them since he can’t be sold in the Mt. Kenya region. So they told us that they want us to work together and get a candidate who can be accepted in the Mt. Kenya region and we agreed to work with them on the condition that they will support Kalonzo and they all agreed,” Mutula revealed.
Mutula added that on the day they were to officially sign the agreement at the Jubilee House, their Jubilee counterparts hid the agreement and came up with other documents. “I told Kalonzo since I respect him, I will allow him to get in and sign the document that is not known to me but I will leave because that’s not what we had agreed,” he added.
Mutula further disclosed that in the agreement they had agreed that infrastructure will be improved in Ukambani, more jobs to the people but Raila cornered them so that for any development project in Ukambani Raila should be there to approve.
“Raila demanded that before a Kamba gets a job from the government, we should first consult with him and that’s why we refused the issue of the debt ceiling to be moved from 6 trillion to 9 trillion which they claimed the money will be used to help the projects in Ukambani to be completed but Raila has been derailing all of them.”
Mutula also alleged that Raila has been blocking Kalonzo to become the president of Kenya since 2007 saying, ” Kalonzo tried his best to support Raila and it’s on the principle that Raila should support Kalonzo but no problem because we can’t force him and that’s why Kalonzo should now go to the people to convince them that he is the best fit for the seat.”
