Kenyan media personality and entrepreneur Betty Kyallo has urged Kenyans to take voter registration seriously, expressing disappointment over the low numbers recorded so far.
Through a passionate post on her Instagram, Betty reacted to reports that only around 50,000 new voters had registered nationwide, calling the figure too low given the country’s population and political awareness.
“Waah, this is not good. Guys, let’s get out there and register. Fifty thousand pekee? Such low numbers,” she said.
The journalist said she was shocked by the figures shared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and encouraged Kenyans especially young people to take part in shaping the country’s leadership.
Betty added that registering as a voter is one of the most powerful ways for citizens to influence decisions that affect their daily lives. She emphasized that civic participation goes beyond just voting day, saying registration is the first and most important step in ensuring representation.
The IEBC launched its continuous voter registration exercise earlier this year as part of preparations for the 2027 General Elections. The commission has been targeting unregistered youth, new voters with national identification cards, and citizens who have relocated and need to transfer their polling stations. Despite efforts such as mobile registration centers and outreach campaigns, turnout has remained lower than expected.
