Former Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana is calling on religious leaders to play a pivotal role in ensuring that President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua maintain unity through to the 2027 elections.
In a recent Facebook post, Kibwana highlighted the importance of collaboration, referencing the successful partnerships of past leaders, including Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga from 2008 to 2012, as well as Uhuru Kenyatta and Ruto from 2017 to 2022.
“Faith leaders should mediate between the President and Deputy. Despite their differences, we should establish a convention of leaders serving full terms. we should establish this as convention,” Kibwana wrote.
He also addressed concerns regarding ethnic representation in politics, pointing out that Article 27(4) of the Constitution prohibits discrimination based on ethnicity, and Article 91 prohibits ethnic-based political parties. While he praised the recognition of marginalized communities such as he argued that it is unjust to marginalize groups from Mt. Kenya and South Eastern regions.
“Article 27(4) of the Constitution forbids discrimination based on ethnicity, and Article 91 prohibits ethnic-based parties. While recognizing the citizenship of Nubians, Makonde, and Shona is commendable, marginalizing Mt. Kenya/South Eastern groups or other sectors is unjust.” He added.
Kibwana’s remarks emphasize the need for unity and inclusivity in Kenya’s political landscape following Deputy President Gachagua’s impeachment and as the nation moves toward the next election cycle.
