Tragedy as 3 men suffocate to death in Athi River Oil Company

Three men lost their lives in Athiriver, Machakos county after suffocating in an oil company.

The saddening incident was confirmed by Athi river Sub-county police commander Mary Njoki who said that the incident took place at around 11 am.

The three who were not identified immediately were said to be removing slugs from a water treatment pit before tragedy struck.

Njoki said that the company should have taken all the protective measures needed before sending the three to the pit.

“The company should take responsibility for the death of the three people,” Njoki said.

“If people have to work at such pits to clean then all the necessary precautions should be taken like provision of gas masks,” The sub-county police commander added.

Njoki added that it’s not clear what happened with the pump that caused the three to decide to get into the pit.

She also noted that by the time the police reached the scene the bodies had been taken from the scene by their colleagues.

The bodies of the three were taken to Machakos level 5 hospital mortuary for preservation. Police have also commenced investigations into the incident.
