Matungulu MP Stephen Mule has criticized the government for failing to confirm interns teaching Junior secondary schools.
Speaking at Kitini on Sunday Mule noted that it is unfair that after a whole year, the government has no plan to confirm the interns as permanent and pensionable.
“Early this year the government took over 20,000 teachers on internship with a promise to employ them. A year is over and from the look of things these teachers are yet to be confirmed. I want to urge the government to do the necessary and employ these teachers permanently as soon as possible,” said the MP.
Mule noted that these teachers are suffering from meager income and their terms of service need to be reviewed.
“They cannot wait until 2025 for the confirmation. The Ministry of Education should be realistic and stop taking teachers for a ride,” he noted.
Mule spoke after attending a Harambee service at Mother Teresa catholic church in Kitini accompanied by area Member of county assembly Mathias Mambo among other leaders.
His sentiments come just days after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua promised that the interns would get priority in case of any hiring opportunity. According to Gachagua, there is a deficit of 11,000 teachers.
