Makueni to Host Africa’s Inaugural Unified Sports Tournament

Makueni County is gearing up to host a historic event: the first-ever Unified Sports tournament in Africa.

The event which is scheduled to take place in Wote town in Makueni on March 9th and 10th, 2024 will feature 12 female football teams from various parts of the county.

Unified sports is a pioneering program brings together an equal mix of athletes with intellectual disabilities and those without, forming cohesive teams for both training and competitive matches.

Led by sportswear giant Nike, in collaboration with Special Olympics Kenya, the Unified Sports initiative aims to nurture empathy, and rally support for individuals with intellectual disabilities within society.

Beyond its social impact, the sport endeavors to break barriers and encourage the active participation of female athletes, particularly those with intellectual disabilities, in the realm of sports.

According to the County, the partnership between Makueni County and Nike blossomed in Berlin, Germany, during the 2023 Special Olympic Games, where Makueni proudly represented Kenya and clinched an impressive haul of medals.

As preparations intensify for this landmark event, Makueni County stands poised to showcase not only its sporting prowess but also its unwavering commitment to fostering unity, diversity, and empowerment within its communities.
