Makueni’s best proceed to Southern Region Athletics Championship

Athletics Kenya Makueni has selected a team of 21 athletes who will meet with 9 athletes who are currently outside the country to represent the county at the AK Southern Region cross-country championship. The competition will be held on 7th January 2023 at Kitui school, Kitui county.

The competition which took place at police grounds Wote brought together different athletes from the Ndumbi training camp and others from all corners of Makueni to compete in the open tournament.

In the race, Steven Muthini won 16km men followed by Dennis Mutuku while Joseph Kyengo finished third in the race. In the ladies’ category under 20 years, Jacinta Kyalo led in the race and was followed by faith Mwende. Sharon Ndanu managed to finish the race as the second runners up.

Athletic Kenya chair Makueni county Joseph Ilovi affirmed that the selected team to represent Makueni in the southern regionals championship is well prepared to win the race.

In addition, Ilovi revealed that they will continue to train them so that they are well-prepared for the events before the initial dates of the competition.

The competition was graced by the Vice president of Athletic Kenya Paul Mutwii who is also the chair of Athletics Kenya Southern region which covers Lower Eastern counties. The Vice-president said that they have witnessed a high level of competition asking parents to be on the front line of motivating their children to participate in sporting events because talent pays when identify early.

“When you witness that your child has a talent in singing, acting, or playing make sure you gain concern because now all those activities have resulted in job creation”. Mutwii said.
