MP Nguna’s Request to Government on sports in Kitui

The 20th edition finals of the Nguna Cup organized by Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna were held on 31st December 2022 at Migwani Highschool Playgrounds.

Mwingi West MP Charles Nguna popularly known as CNN requested the National Government to collaborate with the Kitui County government to come up with a stadium in Kitui county, especially in Mwingi West.

This he says will ensure that talents are nurtured through training and playing in a modern stadium. He noted that there has been a challenge with playing grounds in Kitui since there is no state-of-the-art stadium. This he says is despite the new Principal Secretary for Sports coming from Kitui noting it will be a good thing to establish a stadium or even a sports academy in Kitui.

“I want to request our Governor to join hands with PS Mueke to have one stadium in Kitui, especially in Mwingi West which is a hub for football in Kitui and even Ukambani. Since Mwingi West is a pioneer of football in Kitui, it is good we consider it as a suitable place for a stadium instead of constructing one where sports are not appreciated. We can sit down with our Governor to review where to construct it to avoid having a white elephant project,” the Mwingi West MP stated.

In the event attended by thousands of fans and several dignitaries, Kairungu starlets were crowned as the Nguna cup ladies’ champions winners 2022 for the fourth consecutive time after beating Black Tigers by one goal. In the playoffs, Riverbank Talents won 3 against 1 goal of Kavaliani Starlets.

Kitumbi FC was crowned as the Hon Nguna cup Men’s champions winners 2022 after beating Kavaliani Talent 7 goals to 6 goals in penalties after a draw. In the Playoffs, Kiio FC thrashed Nguutani FC 5 goals to 4 goals after a 1-1 draw.

Nguna commented on all the teams playing classic football saying that the tournament is a chance for many youths from Kitui to get a chance to play for the national teams.

“I hope that the scouts from the National teams who were here select our sons and daughters who will join sports academies in January by Nzoia Sugar and Tusker FC. We are happy for the players as we have witnessed over 25,000 people who came to Migwani to witness the talents of our young people. I thank all those who attended,” Nguna said.

The event was graced by sportsman Ferdinand Omanyala and other dignitaries from the Ministry of Sports.

Nguna Cup is a powerhouse of talent and many budding footballers have seized the opportunity to enhance their lives.

Some of the names who have cut their teeth in the Nguna Cup are; Eric Zakayo (Di Maria) who is currently donning the Tusker FC shirt, Samuel David (Musunza) and Patrick Ngui both currently with Tusker Youth, Ambrose Maithya turning out for Mwatate FC, Janet Muli now with Coast Starlets and Margaret Kavuu Musanga who is officiating Division One leagues.
