Makueni: Inside Ruto’s 25B Development Goodies Promise

President William Ruto’s Ukambani tour came with a package of multi-billion-shilling development projects that promise to transform Makueni County once implemented.

During the first day of his visit, the Head of State announced transformative projects worth nearly Ksh 25 billion, targeting key sectors such as infrastructure, education, trade, housing, and connectivity. The initiatives are expected to uplift livelihoods and accelerate development across the county.

Under the development plan for Makueni County, KSh 1.5 billion has been allocated for the upgrade of key roads to improve connectivity and facilitate the smooth movement of goods and services.

Ruto also confirmed the construction of the Emali–Ukia Road and a bridge across the Muooni River, projects expected to enhance accessibility and link rural communities to major economic centres.

A major highlight of the announcement is the KSh 9.3 billion allocation for the completion of the Thwake Dam, a flagship project aimed at supplying water for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use. This project has been long-awaited and is projected to transform the region into a key agricultural and industrial hub.

To expand access to electricity, the government has set aside KSh 2 billion to connect over 18,000 households to the national grid, reinforcing the ongoing rural electrification program

The housing sector will also receive a major boost, with KSh 11 billion allocated for the construction of affordable housing units and modern student hostels in Wote Town. The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities and address the growing demand for quality housing in the region.

In sports and recreation, the government plans to invest KSh 770 million in the construction of a modern stadium in Wote, while a new playfield in Emali Town will be developed to promote youth talent and sporting activities.

For traders, KSh 350 million has been earmarked for the construction of the Wote Modern Market, with an additional KSh 50 million allocated to upgrade the Mama Mboga Market in Wote. The projects aim to improve the working environment for small-scale traders and stimulate local commerce.

The President further announced plans for the construction of a new primary school in Wote Town, underscoring his administration’s focus on improving access to education and social amenities.

According to government estimates, the total value of the projects with specified budgets stands at approximately KSh 24.97 billion, excluding the school, playfield, bridge, and road works whose costs are yet to be disclosed.

From Makueni, President William Ruto is expected to continue his Ukambani development tour, with his next stop scheduled for Kitui County on Wednesday, November 13.

According to the itinerary, the President’s first engagement will be the inspection of the Kamuwongo–Kandwia Road in Mwingi North, followed by a visit to the Kwasiku–Migwani–Mbondoni Road in Mwingi West.

The day’s program will also include the launch of the Ikutha–Mutha Road in Kitui South and the Chuluni–Nzombe–Mwitika Road in Kitui East.

Additionally, he is expected to commission the Ithookwe Stadium and Kitui Airstrip in Kitui Central, as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve regional infrastructure and promote economic growth.
