Machakos floods death toll at 22 as crisis persists

Machakos County Government Tuesday released an update on the state of floods in the county as well as a number of people affected.

Addressing the press, Machakos County Chief of Staff Lawrence Ngovi said that as of yesterday 22 people had lost their lives due to the heavy rains.

He went ahead to reveal that 15,000 families had been displaced,23 ECDE classrooms were completely destroyed thus requiring a rebuild, and 25,000 households were affected in the county.

“Machakos County continues to experience severe flooding due to the ongoing heavy rains recorded in most parts of the country. So far the tally of the residents killed as a result of flood stands at 22 people,” said the Chief of Staff.

“At least 15,000 families have been displaced from their homes and up to 25,000 households affected. Some 23 ECDE classrooms across the county have been completely destroyed by flooding and are facing a serious crisis ahead of school opening,” he added.

The county government of Machakos received donations from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers Lower Eastern Chapter to aid in assisting the victims of flood victims.
