Machakos County on the Spot over 800M travel expenditure and 4B Pending Bills

Machakos County Government has been put on the spot by the Controller of Budget for spending 800 Million in Foreign and Domestic travel in the 2023/2024 Financial Year.

Expenditure on domestic travel amounted to Kshs.652.76 million and comprised Kshs.196.90 million spent by the County Assembly and Kshs.455.86 million by the County Executive. Expenditure on foreign travel amounted to Kshs.148.68 million and comprised Kshs.65.93 million by the County Assembly and Kshs.82.76 million by the County Executive.

The report also raised concerns about the 4.26 Billion pending as of the end of the 2023/2024 Financial Year. At the beginning of the Financial Year, the County reported a stock of pending bills amounting to Kshs.3.07 billion, comprising Kshs.1.45 billion for recurrent expenditure and Kshs.1.62 billion for development activities. The County settled pending bills amounting to Kshs.553.25 million in the year.

The County wage bill continued to balloon, In the FY 2023/24, expenditure on employee compensation was Kshs.6.80 billion, or 55.2 percent of the available revenue. This expenditure represented an increase from Kshs.5.72 billion reported in FY 2022/23.

In the 2023/2024 Financial Year, The County spent a total of Kshs.12.53 billion. This comprised Kshs.2.95 billion for development and Kshs.9.58 billion and recurrent expenditure.
