What was meant to be a solemn farewell to six children tragically killed in a road accident in Kyoani, Kitui County, quickly turned into an unexpected scene as emotions boiled over among attendees.
The children, who had been on their way to school before the fatal crash, were being laid to rest in a ceremony attended by various local leaders and community members.
Former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Penina Malonza was among the high-profile figures present to offer condolences.
However, midway through her speech, she was handed a note that abruptly asked her to cut short her remarks.
The message, intended to speed up the ceremony, triggered a tense moment as Malonza visibly expressed her displeasure, stating, “I’m past this.”
Malonza, who had served in various high-ranking government roles, appeared to take issue with the perceived lack of respect for her contribution to the event.
The MC later stepped in to try and ease the brewing tension, explaining that the time constraints were necessary due to the extensive plans that followed the ceremony.
“We are not ending the burial here,” he stated. “After this, there will be a procession to the homes of the families for final rites. We are trying to respect their time, as they need to return home for a peaceful farewell.”
After the explanation, Malonza could be spotted smiling in agreement.
In attendance alongside Malonza were other prominent figures including Kitui Governor Julius Malombe, former Governor Charity Ngilu, Senator Enock Kiio, and Kitui South MP Rachel Kaki Nyamai.
Each had come to pay their respects to the children who had lost their lives in a horrifying accident that has left an indelible mark on the community.
As the burial continued, thoughts turned toward the growing concern over road safety in Kitui County.
