Kitui based blogger Emmanuel Maleve, who had been arrested on Thursday and released on Friday, narrated his ordeal after release on 50,000 cash bail.
Addressing the press, Emmanuel disclosed that the police had informed him that his arrest had to do with alleged defamation of Kitui South MP Rachael Kaki Nyamai.
“I was arrested at Muli mall where I am based, the DCI officers arrested and handcuffed me and took me to Kitui police station where they wrote a statement and informed me the case was in Nairobi. We travelled from Kitui to DCI Headquarters at Kiambu road, I wrote a statement and they read the complaint that I am defaming Kaki Nyamai, Kitui South MP.” Emmanuel narrated.
They then took him to Muthaiga police station and was informed that he would be arraigned in court on Friday (2nd May) over a cybercrime case. He, however, was not taken to Court and was released on police cash bail.
“I am now free and returning to Kitui to carry on my activism. Politicians should not use their power to intimidate those unearthing what they are doing on the ground. I was so embarrassed that a sitting MP is saying I’m defaming her by telling people the truth.
On Friday, Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu strongly condemned the arrest of blogger Emmanuel Maleve in Kitui town, terming the incident a shameful attack on freedom of expression. Missed the Story? check it out below;
