Kinyui: Calls for dam fencing intensify after tragic drowning incident

The County Government of Machakos has been asked to ensure the Uku dam in Kinyui, Matungulu sub county is fenced to avert cases of drowning.

This was said by Muthwani assistant chief Consolata Makau after a recent incident of drowning involving a 35-year-old man.

The chief said that the locals were glad the dam was desilted but as long as it was open it posed danger to everyone.

“We are grateful because the dam was desilted but it is a risk to us all if it is not fenced, If it could be fenced then such incidents could be averted,” she said.

The chief spoke after confirming the retrieval of the body of the man after a two-day search.

The man who was not identified immediately was heading home with his friend after a night of drinking on Wednesday night.

On reaching the Uku dam in King’oti the man decided to swim when tragedy struck. He started drowning and his friend jumped in to save him but also started drowning.

Locals who heard the commotion also came to help rescue the two but only one was rescued alive.

Due to darkness, the body of the man could not be found and the retrieval operations had to be postponed.

She noted that locals with the help of county officers from the Department of Emergency Services were able to retrieve the body.

The body was moved to Kangundo level four hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting post-mortem.
