Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has pledged to support Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should the opposition rally behind him as their joint presidential flagbearer in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Friday during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Uhuru Park, Matiang’i urged opposition leaders to set aside personal ambitions and unite in a common effort to challenge President William Ruto in the upcoming polls.
“We have agreed that we must put ambition and everything else before the interest of this country,” Matiang’i told the delegates. “When we sit together and the united opposition decides that you (Kalonzo) will be the candidate, I will support you and we will stand with you.”
Matiang’i emphasized that unity among opposition parties was critical for achieving meaningful political change, saying that collective action would shape the direction of Kenya’s future leadership.
The conference marked a significant milestone for the Wiper Patriotic Front, which officially endorsed Kalonzo Musyoka as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. The former Vice President was presented with his nomination certificate during a colourful ceremony attended by thousands of party delegates and supporters.
Several senior opposition figures were present, including Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Party of Liberal Progress (PLP) leader Martha Karua, DAP–Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa, former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, and Fred Matiang’i.
In his acceptance speech, Kalonzo thanked party members for their confidence and pledged to lead a transformative campaign focused on unity, justice, and economic renewal.
“I accept your nomination to be your presidential candidate for the 2027 elections,” Kalonzo declared to thunderous applause.
He also paid a heartfelt tribute to his wife, Pauline Musyoka, acknowledging her unwavering support and resilience.
“You are a vision bearer, and every day you continue to amaze me. May the good Lord grant you the healing we have been waiting for,” he said.
The Wiper endorsement positions Kalonzo as a key player in the evolving opposition landscape, as discussions intensify over forming a unified front to take on President Ruto in 2027.
