Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti and senior county officials appeared before the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to respond to audit queries for the 2022/2023 Financial year.
In the heated session, the team was taken to task for over 1.4 billion in financial statements and only 700 million in IFMIS resulting in a variance of 663 million.
“The man on the street might assume the 663 million variances in financial statement and IFMIS is a fake expenditure,” Homabay Senator Otieno Kajwang the Public Accounts committee chair questioned.
The Senators also told off the County officials for blaming the last regime more than 2 years into Wavinya’s administration. “When the governor took office the situation was bad.” Finance CECM Onesmus Muia said as Senator Kajwang interjected and told him to vacate that line.
“We are 2 years down the line so they should not be talking about the previous government, talk about the current government.” Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu interjected.
The senators also took the Governor and county team on over the late filing of responses a day before the sitting. When Governor Wavinya asked the Finance CECM to answer, the committee chair directed it was the Governor to answer as the County CEO.
Governor Wavinya was forced to apologize for the late filing of the responses.
