Kitui: 6 learners die in morning accident

Six learners lost their lives on Friday morning in a grisly accident along Kitui-Kibwezi road.

The accident involving three students of Kyoani secondary school and three pupils of Kyoani primary school happened at Kyoani in Ikutha, Kitui county. The six were heading to school at the time of the ghastly accident.

The incident was confirmed by area chief Patrick Ngala who said that the probox driver knocked down these kids and attempted to flee the scene.

“The vehicle, a probox was heading from Kibwezi to Mutomo direction before losing control and hitting the children killing them on the spot, the accident happened at around 6:20 am,” said the chief.

“Drivers should be careful on this road and be wary of other road users because accidents have been witnessed lately,” he added.

According to a police report filed at Ikutha police station it was confirmed that five of the victims were girls and the other one a boy.

The driver was later arrested by Kibwezi police while on the run and the vehicle involved impounded.

Bodies of the learners were taken to Mutomo Hospital mortuary as investigations commenced.
