Stephen Kitheka the Chief of Nzanzeni location in Tseikuru, Mwingi North sub-county, sustained severe injuries after being attacked by a brewer during a crackdown on illicit brew.
According to Tseikuru Assistant County Commissioner James Njoroge, the chief had received a tip from members of the public on Monday about the suspect’s involvement in brewing illicit alcohol.
Acting on this information, Chief Kitheka accompanied by the Assistant Chief stormed the distiller’s home around 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
Despite the chief’s repeated requests for the woman to open her door, the suspect responded with hostility.
“The chief went to the home of the suspected ‘mawa’ brewer in the company of assistant chief Nancy Muthengi, but his pleas to the woman to open the door were met with harsh words from the suspect,” Njoroge said.
The situation escalated when the woman who was armed with a panga suddenly emerged from her house wielding a panga and attacked the chief cutting him on the forehead and right hand before fleeing into nearby bushes.
The bleeding Chief Kitheka was rushed to Tseikuru Level 4 Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and later discharged. Following the incident, the suspect voluntarily surrendered at Tseikuru police station, where she was taken into custody.
Assistant County Commissioner Njoroge confirmed that the chief, along with witnesses, recorded statements at the police station. The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
