KNUT SG Gives Update on Schools Reopening

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has urged parents and teachers to remain calm as schools will have to remain closed indefinitely.

Speaking to Mauvoo News, Oyuu supported the government’s move to postpone school opening noting that they still do not have the opening dates yet.

“Looking at the situation of the country as it is, especially at the time the decision was made, the situation could have been dangerous had it not been avoided,” stated Oyuu.

Oyuu noted that KNUT has 110 branches all over the country and their secretaries have been giving daily reports on the state of schools. He described the state of most schools as very pathetic.

“It’s a double tragedy for these learners because their homes are also submerged, the position as it is right now is the state is not normal,” He went on.

“I look at Social media right now and I see schools, classes are submerged, water levels are almost at window level and most of the destruction is on the infrastructure and learning materials in those schools and the security of whoever would wish to get into those schools is also compromised,” added the SG.

The SG urged parents to remain patient until normalcy is realized.

Oyuu told Mauvoo news that the Ministry of Education officials have also been collecting data on the State of schools.

He further urged the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to do thorough data collection on the kind of interference the floods have caused so that should there be any reasonable change then no time is wasted.
