Ken wa Maria addresses beef with Kativui

Renowned Benga star Ken Wa Maria has downplayed rumours of bad blood between him and fellow artist Benard Mbatha, popularly known as Kativui, saying he harbours no grudge against any musician, including those who once worked under him.

Wa Maria, who has been a key figure in shaping modern Benga music for over two decades, says while comparisons and industry gossip are common, he maintains a professional attitude.

“I don’t hold grudges. I can share a stage with anyone, even the devil, as long as I’m paid what I deserve,” he said with a laugh.

Speculation about a rift between the two Benga heavyweights has been rife.

But Wa Maria insists he has no personal beef and is open to performing with anyone if the terms are right.

“Most of the Benga artists you see today started under me, they were my workers. I mentored and even employed them. I would never let pride or rivalry stop me from performing with any of them,” Ken Maria, in an interview added.

According to him, the real issue in the industry isn’t beef, it’s payment.

“Some artists ask for peanuts, then complain when they hear I’ve asked for more. I’ve been in this game for 21 years. I know my worth, and I won’t apologize for it,” he stated firmly.

He added that the mushrooming singers don’t threaten him as he thrives when there is competition.
