Kavindu asks SRC to review ECDE Teachers’ Salaries

Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu has asked the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review the new salaries for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.

The Senator said that the salaries that were being given to the teachers were unreasonable given the current inflation and high cost of living.

Kavindu speaking at Koma said that the salaries were a mockery to the teachers who do a lot of work in building the foundation of every child.

“These people have Diplomas and they do a lot of work as they are the ones who start to teach the children about education and others even act as nannies for the kids and they get paid 7,000 it is unfair and absurd,” Senator Kavindu said.

She added that the teachers should be highest paid because of the kind of labor and effort they put into the kids.

Kavindu revealed that if such a pay was going to be tolerated it would demoralize those in school and are passionate about the career.

“In the future, if you still pay them such peanuts no one will be interested in the career anymore. The salaries and Remuneration Commission needs to review their salaries. What can 7,000 do at this time even one cannot do shopping with it and feed their families,” said Kavindu.

She further called on the National Government to start a school feeding program in all the schools as drought and famine were going to be a big disaster in the country.
