Kalonzo, Karua accuse Government of Grabbing Kenya Railways Retirees’ Land

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua have accused the government of illegally seizing property belonging to retired Kenya Railways workers.

Speaking to the Press in Nairobi, Kalonzo and Karua alleged that a senior government official orchestrated the land takeover, despite the property being legally vested in the retirees’ pension scheme through a Cabinet memo.

“The retirees have a legal right to this land. It was part of their retirement package. But now, powerful individuals in government are attempting to take it away from them. The General Service Unit (GSU) has been deployed to guard the land as a private developer demolishes their homes,” Kalonzo stated.

Karua echoed his sentiments, revealing that the land had already been sold for Ksh. 400 million, with retirees having received Ksh. 320 million so far. She insisted that the rightful owners must be protected.

“This land belongs to the retirees, not the government or any land grabber. The legal process was followed, and the sale was legitimate. Yet, retirees are being forced out,” she said.

Retired Kenya Railways employees, through their association, have been holding peaceful demonstrations, demanding the return of their land. They claim their pensions were never fully paid and the land was part of their rightful compensation.

The opposition leaders have now called on President William Ruto to intervene and explain who is behind the alleged land grab. Meanwhile, tension remains high as retirees continue their protests, hoping for justice in the face of what they call an illegal eviction.
