Reprieve for Athi River Residents as Sewerage System Project Kicks Off

Residents of Athi River have received a major reprieve following the launch of a long-awaited sewerage system project aimed at improving sanitation and curbing environmental pollution.

The Machakos County Government, through the Department of Sewerage, Sanitation, and Waste Management, has commenced a major rehabilitation of the Athi River Mining Road sewer system — a move expected to address years of infrastructural neglect.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized that the initiative goes beyond infrastructure.

“This project is not just about pipes and drains — it’s about restoring dignity and health to a community that has long suffered,” she stated on her official Facebook page.

The governor noted that the revamped sewer system will help prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, protect local water sources from pollution, and ultimately enhance public health and community well-being.

For years, residents of Athi River have decried poor sanitation due to old and broken sewer lines, which have led to frequent wastewater overflows into streets, homes, and nearby rivers. The resulting environmental degradation and health risks have been a persistent concern.

Under Governor Ndeti’s administration, the county has pledged to overhaul sewerage systems across all urban centers, starting with the most affected areas.

“I am committed to maintaining a properly functioning sewerage system in all our urban settlements to improve living conditions and support economic development by ensuring a clean and healthy environment,” she added.

The project marks a significant step in the county’s broader urban renewal and sanitation improvement agenda.
