Crisis in the Making: Dr. Yumbya Decries Surge in Doctor Migration

Dr. Daniel Yumbya, the Director of the International Medical Regulatory Authority (IMRA), has raised alarm over the increasing migration of African doctors to Europe, America, and other developed nations.

Speaking at the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) conference in Abuja, Dr. Yumbya described the trend as “alarming” and urged African governments to address the root causes urgently.

“Our doctors are leaving because of poor pay and harsh working environments. Once abroad, they find better offers, good salaries, structured healthcare systems, and access to resources.” Dr. Yumbya said.

He emphasized the need for governments to implement the Abuja Declaration, which recommends allocating at least 15 percent of national budgets to the health sector.

“The Ministry of Health should be empowered to offer loans, mortgages, car financing, and other incentives to support health workers,” he stated.

He further recommended that those who have migrated should be replaced by employing new doctors, and called for strengthening of training institutions and facilities to produce specialists who can mentor young professionals locally.

“This is the only way we will retain talent and build a strong, sustainable healthcare system for Africa,” he concluded.
