Mercy Mawia’s husband speaks of her 2-year sickness journey and last moments

James Mwangi husband to late Radio presenter Mercy Mawia ‘Kamuwetangi’ has disclosed details of her sickness Journey and her last moments.

Speaking during a candle lighting at Captains lounge Tuesday, Mwangi disclosed that unknown to many, Mercy was unwell for some time but her condition was worsened by the 5-month pregnancy.

“Mercy was last in the studio on Thursday (18th July) and did her show as usual. On Friday she had an appointment with the doctor and did not go to work. It has been a journey, she has been ailing inside but has been entertaining you with a smile. She was a fighter.” Mwangi narrated.

“A while back Mercy was diagnosed with blood clots in the abdomen, they were severe and she was admitted to Nairobi hospital and started medication. It takes time to treat clots. 3 Months down the line Mercy was expecting, being expectant with her condition it was always a risk. There were other issues and we had stayed for 8 years trying to find a child. When she found she was expectant she took the risk to keep the baby. We went to find the best doctors who gave us hope. “ He went on.

Mwangi added that Mercy was 5 months pregnant and had about 16 ultrasounds done on her noting the blood clots issue escalated the situation.

“Mercy’s pregnancy was 5 months and we have been in and out of hospital. Most of you ladies know that when expectant you need to visit the clinic, by the time of birth the most number of ultrasounds one can have is 2 or 3 but in 5 months we had done 16 ultrasounds as it was a risky pregnancy. Doctors in the house know that treating blood clots involves the use of blood thinners, Mercy’s was severe they were all over her abdomen and back and she used to take a lot of drugs, I used to inject her everything when she came from work.” Mercy’s husband said.

In Mercy’s final moments, he disclosed that on Saturday (20th July) Mercy woke up and started preparing to attend Fortune Mwikali’s wedding but she was clearly unwell and he convinced her not to attend and they instead went to the hospital. They went to the hospital as an emergency and an ultrasound was done and they returned home.

“After that Sunday was okay and then Monday she didn’t go to work we stayed in bed. The bleeding had stopped and she was okay. In the evening around 5 pm, she woke up and after standing she told me she felt like the child was coming out. At 8 weeks Mercy had done McDonald’s stitching to prevent the baby from coming out. We went back to the hospital again and true the baby was coming out, the baby had ruptured the uterus. Doctors came in one after another after she was rushed to the theatre and they had to remove the baby. Mercy was heartbroken. After surgery everything looked okay and she was to be moved to the ICU but that didn’t happen she got a cardiac arrest resulting in her death.” He added

Mwangi disclosed that Mercy was in theatre for 12 hours and they incurred huge bills as many doctors and specialists had to come to rescue the situation noting that the insurance had been exhausted. Here is a pay bill you can use to Support Mercy’s family.

A requiem mass for Mercy will be held on 31st July 2024 ahead of her burial on the 2nd of August at their Nyahururu home.
