Why Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai wants NEMA Director General suspended

Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai has recommended the suspension of the National Environment Management Authority(NEMA) Director General Mamo Boru with immediate effect.

Speaking during a tour by the National Assembly public petitions committee at Ikalaasa in Mwala sub-county, Mbai who is the Chairperson of the Committee said that for the cleaning of the Athi River and Nairobi River to commence the person in charge of NEMA needed to be suspended.

Mbai noted that the two rivers had been polluted while on his watch and it was unwise of the government to continue allowing him to supervise the cleaning of the River.

“Because this thing has been serious and people have even died due to the consumption of this water we have called for the suspension of the NEMA Director with immediate effect,” said Mbai.

“Nairobi and Athi River cleaning cannot commence when someone who has witnessed the pollution of the rivers for years is still in office and now he wants to supervise the cleaning, that cannot be done,” he added.

Mwala MP Vincent Musyoka who had filed the petition in the National Assembly said that big companies and hospitals were the major contributors to the pollution of the Athi River.

He noted that it is time the contributors of the pollution be arrested so it can be a lesson to the other people who are planning to start companies and be lazy in cleaning their waste.

“Am glad today the Public Petitions Committee has come and witnessed how the Athi River has been polluted. Sadly, big companies and hospitals are the ones releasing their waste into the river without care,” said Vincent.

“My plea is that all those that have contributed to the pollution be put to justice and let it be a lesson to other people planning to open companies and be lazy in cleaning their waste,” he added.

Mbai had been accompanied by Kitui West Member of Parliament Edith Vethi Nyenze.
