Machakos: Cancer cases increase attributed to River Athi pollution

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has identified the pollution of River Athi as the main cause of cancer in Machakos County.

Speaking during the interdenominational prayers held at Kenya Stadium by the Clergy Alliance of Kenya, Wavinya said that cancer has been a big menace in the Country noting that it is high time that people stood to fight for it.

She noted that Mavoko and Mwala sub-counties were leading in cases of cancer due to the pollution of River Athi.

The Governor went on to say that together with the Deputy President they would be doing a cleaning-up exercise of the River Athi to ensure precautions are taken.

“Cancer is a very big problem here in Machakos County and am happy today Madam you will excuse me I have to go and meet the Deputy President because we are going to that meeting, it’s about the Athi River,” said Wavinya.

“Most of the sickness we are getting here is to do with the Athi Fiver, Mwala and Mavoko sub-counties are leading in cases of cancer, we shall go clean the river as a team, and let’s take care of our people,” she added.

She went on to commend the Deputy President’s spouse Dorcas Rigathi for the great work she was doing rescuing the boy child from drugs and substance abuse.

In attendance were Machakos Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi, CAS Victor Munyaka, clergy, and other leaders from Ukambani.
