A 44-year-old man has died by suicide at his in-laws’ home in Kikeneani, Yatta sub-county, Machakos County.
The man, who had travelled from Kalawa in Mbooni sub-county, Makueni County, is reported to have gone to his wife’s parents’ home in an attempt to convince her to return to their matrimonial home.
According to Kyua location chief Antony Kilundo, the talks failed, and the man threatened to end his life if his wife refused to go back with him.
“The woman declined to come out despite pleas from the man. She had earlier told her parents that before she left, the man had threatened to kill her and then take his own life, which made her fear for her safety,” said the chief.
Family members reportedly tried to restrain the man and even managed to seize a rope he intended to use, but he produced another and hanged himself from a tree within the compound.
“The family feared that if the woman agreed to return with him, he might have harmed her given his previous threats,” Kilundo added.
The body was moved to Kitui Level Five Hospital mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.
