Machakos Nurses Demand Payment of Overdue Allowances

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Machakos Branch, led by Secretary General Michael Saka, convened a press conference at Machakos Level 5 Hospital to demand immediate payment of overdue allowances.

Saka highlighted the alarming trend of ‘cartels’, allegedly pocketing over 7 million shillings in allowances meant for nurses since March 2020. Stating the urgency of rectifying this injustice, particularly in light of the sacrifices made by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic, where some members tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

Saka pointed out that the real challenge lies with individuals within the system who are exploiting the situation for personal gain, at the expense of nurses’ welfare and public health.

“We have no issue with Governor Wavinya Ndeti ‘ But the mole is within those scrounging Her and not telling the truth”. Stated Saka.

The Nurses Union has forwarded the matter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for investigation and action. Saka stressed the need for implicated managers or directors to step aside pending the outcome of the investigation and urged for transparency.

“We need Managers or Directors implicated in looting the Hospital to step aside for investigation, Polio donor funding be investigated and list of those involved be tabled in 7 days” ” he added

Saka stressed the importance of implementing a robust management system at Machakos Level 5 Hospital. He called for the appointment of a qualified CEO and the establishment of a proper board to oversee operations and ensure accountability.

“Machakos Level 5 Hospital is a sleeping Giant that requires comprehensive Management with a CEO & a proper Board” he lamented.
