Several little known schools in Kitui County have delivered outstanding performances in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), outperforming many traditional academic giants and cementing the region’s growing reputation for excellence.
Toping the list is Zombe Day and Boarding Secondary School, which posted an impressive mean score of 8.721 (Grade B) with 183 candidates, with a remarkable 98.91 per cent transition rate to university after 181 candidates attained C+ and above. The school has shown consistent growth over the last three years, rising from a mean score of 6.252 in 2023 to 7.052 in 2024, before peaking in 2025.
In Mwingi, Kaundu Secondary School also recorded stellar results, achieving a mean score of 8.617 (Grade B) with 154 candidates. The school registered strong performances across upper grades, further underscoring its steady academic ascent.
Kyamboo Secondary School, based in Migwani, posted a mean score of 8.01 (Grade B-), with 114 out of 118 candidates (96.6 per cent) attaining C+ and above, placing it among the county’s top-performing institutions in terms of university qualification rates.
Meanwhile, Migwani Boys Secondary School continued its upward trajectory, recording strong results in the 2025 examinations. The school achieved a 95.83 per cent university transition rate, with 184 out of 192 candidates qualifying for degree programmes, reflecting sustained improvement compared to previous years.
As the 2025 KCSE results continue to be analysed the results signal a shifting academic landscape in the county Kitui County is emerging as a quiet but formidable force in Kenya’s education sector where determination and effective leadership are enabling smaller and lesser-known schools to rival—and in some cases surpass—long-established academic powerhouses.
