Government Urged to Ease SHA Registration for Kenyans

The Ministry of Health has been urged to simplify the registration process for the Social Health Authority (SHA) to ensure more Kenyans can access healthcare services under the new insurance scheme.

Dr. Richard Munywoki, a senior doctor at the newly launched Ngoo Sya Wendo Hospital in Kangundo, expressed concern that many patients are struggling to register for SHA due to the requirement to pay for a full year’s cover upfront.

“Many of our patients are facing financial hardships. Expecting them to pay for a whole year at once is unrealistic,” said Dr. Munywoki. “Some have managed to pay for two months, yet they are still not covered under SHA, which is frustrating.”

He praised the government’s efforts to roll out the new health scheme but emphasized the need for flexibility, similar to what was offered under the now-defunct NHIF.

“SHA is a good initiative, but it must be accessible. The government should consider allowing monthly payments or phased contributions to ease the burden, especially for low-income earners as long as the payments are up-to date,” he added.

Dr. Munywoki also called on the government to fast-track payments to health facilities to ensure smooth operations and uninterrupted services.

“SHA is a step in the right direction, but some adjustments are urgently needed to make it work better for hospitals and patients alike,” he concluded
