8 Machakos MCAs Risk Losing Seats Over Absenteeism

Eight Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) in Machakos are facing the risk of losing their seats over absenteeism from House sittings.

Speaker Ann Kiusya has issued show-cause letters to the legislators, dated September 8th, requiring them to explain why their seats should not be declared vacant.

Those affected include Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka, Deputy Speaker Stephen Mwanthi, Judas Ndawa, Felix Ngui, Julius Munywoki, Raphael Nzau, Erick Wambua, and Ann Mutevu.

“I write to you in my capacity as the Speaker of the County Assembly of Machakos, pursuant to the provisions of Article 194(1)(b) of the Constitution of Kenya, which states that a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) shall vacate their seat if they fail to attend more than eight sittings of the Assembly without reasonable cause,” the letters read in part.

“It has come to my attention that you have not attended eight (8) sittings in the fourth session of the 3rd Assembly sittings. Such absences are considered a violation of the constitutional requirement for active participation in the Assembly’s proceedings,” they went on.

The development comes even as Deputy Speaker Nicholas Mwanthi and Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka revived plans to impeach Speaker Kiusya after the courts gave a green light.
