Ukambani Governors Advocate for Increased County Funding

The South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB) Governors convened an extraordinary summit on Thursday, joined by commissioners from the Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA) to discuss the fourth basis of revenue sharing.

During the meeting, Governors Mutula Kilonzo Jr (Makueni), Julius Malombe (Kitui), and Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos) made a compelling case for an upward adjustment in county allocations. They emphasized the importance of ensuring that devolved units receive adequate funding to effectively address the various challenges facing citizens.

In a communique issued after the meeting, the governors highlighted the necessity for funds to align with functions, particularly in healthcare, considering the heightened risks and pressures along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

“…The CRA must acknowledge that funds must follow functions and that the revenue sharing formula must take into consideration the additional risks and pressure on the healthcare that the Bloc faces owing to accidents occurring along the transnational Nairobi-Mombasa Highway…”, read a press statement in part.

The governors further resolved to rally Members of the National Assembly and Senators from the SEKEB Bloc to unite in advocating for the defense of devolution. They intend to champion the SEKEB position when the CRA revenue-sharing formula is presented in Parliament, demonstrating a collective commitment to advancing the interests of their respective counties and the region as a whole.
