Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stepped in, lending his support to a high-profile case involving a detained minor, Pauline Dan ,who is facing charges of malicious damage to property and theft.
Sonko, accompanied by lawyer Liz Ochieng, appeared at the Ngong Law Courts for the ongoing proceedings involving Pauline. The teenager had spent three months in remand at Lang’ata Women’s Prison after being unable to raise cash bail.
According to court documents, she allegedly broke a television set valued at KSh 33,000 while sweeping at her guardian’s home, who is a pastor with whom she is reportedly had a misunderstanding. She also faces a second accusation of allegedly stealing KSh 18,000 from the same guardian.
“She had spent 3 months in remand prison, her poor parents could not raise her cash bail after being charged with the offence of malicious damage to property for allegedly breaking a TV worth Sh33k while sweeping at her guardian’s house, who’s a pastor,r” revealed Sonko in a post following a cout appearance.
Moved by her situation, Sonko posted her bail months ago and has since committed to ensuring she receives adequate legal representation throughout the trial.
“This particular case hurt me and gave me sleepless nights while the minor was still behind bars, We will continue to support Pauline until the matter is fully resolved.” Sonko Added.
The case has sparked wider conversations on the treatment of minors in the justice system, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.
Dan’s parents were reportedly unable to afford her bail, which contributed to her prolonged stay in remand as the matter remains ongoing, with the court expected to deliver further directions in the coming weeks.
