Machakos announces significant shift in revenue collection

Machakos County has fully transitioned to a cashless revenue collection system in a strategic move to enhance revenue generation and seal corruption loopholes.

Speaking in Kathiani, County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Onesmus Kuyu, noted that the shift from manual revenue collection has significantly improved the county’s financial management thus ensuring transparency and efficiency.

“The move to a cashless system was necessary to eliminate corruption and seal all revenue leakages. By removing human interaction with cash and introducing pay bill numbers for payments including general and hospital revenue, we have witnessed a significant rise in our Own Source Revenue, which greatly supports the county’s development agenda,” Kuyu said.

According to the latest County Revenue Mapping survey, Machakos has 58,062 registered business enterprises.

Kuyu expressed confidence that with improved efficiency in revenue collection, the county is poised for transformative development, increased wealth creation, and job opportunities.

“Right now I know how many public vehicles we have, how many buildings and shops we have. Our revenue collection from PSV vehicles has increased since the money is paid through the SACCOs,” noted Kuyu.

He insisted and asked locals also to avoid paying cash and report any officer asking for cash.

In the first quarter of the current Financial Year 2024/25, the County generated a total of Kshs.287.42 million from its sources of revenue. This amount was an increase of 286.4 percent compared to Kshs.103.82 million realized in a similar period in FY 2023/24 and was 8 percent of the annual target. This was the highest collection in Quarter one for the last 8 years.
