Historic Upsets in KCSE 2025 as Thomeandu Boys and Matiliku Floor Makueni Giants

The release of the 2025 KCSE results has reshaped the academic rankings in Makueni County, with Thomeandu Boys High School and AIC Matiliku Boys High School emerging as some of the leading schools.

Thomeandu Boys High School recorded a historic breakthrough, outperforming long-established county academic giants such as Makueni Boys, Kaumoni Boys and Mbooni Boys to claim second position among the county’s top-performing schools.

The results, released by the Ministry of Education on Friday, marked a defining moment for the once little-known institution.

The school posted a clean grade profile, with C+ emerging as the minimum grade attained. All the 103 candidates who sat the examination scored C+ and above, translating to a 100 per cent university transition rate. The results included one A-, nine B+, forty-five B, forty-three B- and five C+, with no candidate recording a C, D or E. Thomeandu posted a mean score of 8.5922 (B).

Makueni Boys High School, which has for years dominated the county’s academic scene, recorded a wider grade spread from a much larger candidature of 446 candidates. The school produced one A, thirteen A-, sixty-seven B+, one hundred and nineteen B and one hundred and forty-four B-.

The lower grades included seventy-three C+, eighteen C and ten C-, with the minimum grade being D+, attained by one candidate. Overall, 417 students, representing 93.49 per cent, achieved C+ and above. The school recorded a mean score of 8.343.

AIC Matiliku Boys High School also posted a strong performance, further underlining the changing academic landscape in the county. The school recorded a mean score of 7.5728 (B-), an improvement from 6.648 (C+) in 2024, representing a positive deviation of 0.9248.

Out of 323 candidates, 253 students, equivalent to 78.33 per cent, attained C+ and above, qualifying for university admission. The grade distribution included one A, ten A-, twenty-three B+, fifty-five B, seventy-seven B- and eighty-seven C+.

Matiliku’s improved results saw the Nzaui-based school edge past Kitondo School, which nonetheless posted commendable results. Kitondo recorded a mean score of 7.50 from a candidature of 287 candidates. The school produced nine B+, forty-seven B, eighty-nine B-, eighty-seven C+ and forty-five C, with 232 candidates, representing 80.8 per cent, attaining C+ and above.

Meanwhile, Mbooni Girls High School topped the county rankings after posting a mean score of 9.60, leading the list of the top ten performing schools in Makueni County.

Education stakeholders say the 2025 KCSE results point to a shifting academic order in the county, as sustained improvement and focused academic strategies challenge long-standing hierarchies.

The strong showings by Thomeandu Boys and Matiliku Boys highlight growing competition among schools and steadily rising academic standards across Makueni County.
